The villa commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Pisani, a Venetian patrician, stands on the site of an ancient Este fortress over a thousand years old. The sixteenth-century palace with frescoes by Paolo Veronese, Gian Battista Zelotti, Dario Varotari and the Flemish Ludovico Toeput, known as Pozzoserrato, was created as the administrative seat of the land properties acquired in 1478 in the Lower Padovana area. Evelina van Millingen, born in Constantinople to an English family of Flemish origin, where she lived her early childhood, and raised in London and Rome, created the garden and park in the gardenesque style of the time, with Islamic, English and Flemish influences. Mariella Bolognesi Scalabrin, the current owner, has lovingly restored and cared for the villa and garden.
